Introduction

Catania is the second most populated city in Sicily. It is located at the foot of Etna, the highest active volcano in Europe, and on the coast of the Ionian Sea. The rich history and culture of the city is due to the different dominations that have followed one another over the centuries: Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Normans, Swabians, Aragonese, Angevins and Spanish. Monuments and churches present in the city are the result of these different cultures. The Etna volcano and the city center are on the UNESCO World Heritage list.
